Understanding The Male Reproductive System
Our men’s health focus includes treating a wide variety of male reproductive health issues and conditions. To best treat any conditions it is key to first understand what structures and organs make up the male reproductive system.
Male Reproductive System: Structures and Organs
This complex system requires hormones to stimulate or regulate the activity of cells or organs. The main hormones are follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone.
External Male Reproductive System Organs:
The majority of the male reproductive system is external, and those structures include the following:
- Penis – the male organ for sexual intercourse, which contains a number of sensitive nerve endings
- Scrotum – the loose, pouch-like sac of skin behind the penis that contains the testicles
- Testicles (testes) – the oval organs in the scrotum that are responsible for making testosterone
Internal Male Reproductive System Organs:
The internal male reproductive system is complex, and includes the following:
- Vas deferens – a long, muscular tube that transports mature sperm to the urethra
- Ejaculatory ducts – the structures that empty into the urethra
- Urethra – the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body and also functions to expel semen when the man reaches orgasm
- Seminal vesicles – the sac-like pouches that attach to the vas deferens, these vesicles provide sperm with a source of energy to help their mobility
- Prostate gland – the structure located below the bladder and in front of the rectum; this gland contributes additional fluid to ejaculate and also help nourish the sperm
- Bulbourethral glands – the structures on the sides of the urethra and below the prostate gland; these glands produce a clear fluid that lubricates the urethra and neutralizes any acidity present in the urethra.
